Ha Kone ( July) -beginning of buddhist lent

July, known as Waso in the Mon calendar, marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent, one of the most important religious periods for Mon people. This sacred season lasts for three months during the rainy season and encourages people to practice morality, meditation, and religious devotion.

One of the main activities during Waso is making merit at monasteries. Families prepare food, candles, robes, and other necessities to offer to monks. These donations support the monastic community during the rainy season and allow people to gain merit through acts of generosity.

Monasteries become important centers of spiritual learning during this period. Many people visit temples to listen to Buddhist sermons, practice meditation, and observe religious precepts. Some individuals avoid harmful behavior, refrain from alcohol, and devote more time to religious activities.

Young men may enter temporary ordination during Waso. Becoming a novice monk allows them to study Buddhist teachings and develop self-discipline. Families often consider this tradition an important step in personal and spiritual development.

The candle offering ceremony is another important custom during this month. People donate large candles and religious supplies to monasteries. The light of the candles symbolizes wisdom and guidance, helping believers follow the path of Buddhism.

Families also gather together to perform religious activities at home. Parents teach children about Buddhist teachings and encourage them to practice kindness, honesty, and respect. Elders share stories about religious traditions and explain the importance of moral behavior.
Community members support one another through charitable activities and acts of kindness. Helping neighbors, donating to those in need, and participating in community projects are common practices during Waso. These actions strengthen social relationships and promote harmony within the community.
Today, Waso remains an important period for Mon people in Myanmar, Thailand, and other countries. Although modern lifestyles have changed some customs, the spiritual significance of Buddhist Lent continues to influence daily life. Through religious practice, generosity, and community participation, Mon people preserve both their faith and cultural traditions.
