Three of Top South Media’s publications won big at last week’s community newspaper awards in Auckland.

Waimea Weekly has taken out the title of Best Front Page in the country while Nelson Weekly was Highly Commended in the same category. Nelson Magazine won Best Magazine Cover at the same awards.

Judges assessed the Weekly as “understanding what a community newspaper should be”.

“The layout was clean, accessible and ready to read. This straightforward, reader-first approach made it highly effective as a community newspaper front page and set it apart from the rest of the field.”

Reporter Gordon Preece was Runner-Up in the Best Headline Writer category and Britt Coker was Runner-Up in the Feature Writer of the Year award for her work on Nelson Magazine.

Publisher and co-owner of Top South Media, Andrew Board, says the national recognition is great reward for his team.

“Anytime you win a national award and are recognised among your peers, it is really special. We have a fantastic team that work so hard to put together our incredibly popular newspapers and magazines, so I’m delighted for us all.

“From reporters, to designers, to salespeople, to admin, to our delivery team, everyone puts so much passion into it, they deserve it.”
